Documentary Names Israeli Soldier in Killing of Shireen Abu Akleh
A new documentary titled Who Killed Shireen? has identified Israeli soldier Alon Scagio as the individual who allegedly shot and killed Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in 2022. Despite previous Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) findings suggesting a “high possibility” of accidental fire, no criminal investigation was launched.
Produced by U.S.-based Zeteo, the film brings renewed calls for accountability amid widespread accusations of systemic impunity for journalist killings by the IDF. Scagio, who was later killed in Jenin in 2024, had been reassigned after the shooting. The U.S. FBI’s investigation remains unresolved more than two years after Abu Akleh’s death, while the International Criminal Court has yet to initiate a formal probe.
